My research soon told me that a ‘functional level of literacy’ (I learnt to hate that term!) was needed for reading recipes, accessing social media, getting a license, employment and general ‘adulting’. It also roughly translates to grade 5 or 6. I was shocked that my articulate, witty, very bright little boy might be facing a future where he couldn’t write a resume or read a contract. But, we were going to get him through and figure out what supports were needed and argue with whoever we needed to to get those supports in place.
And the layer over all of this was: how on earth do we maintain his self esteem through this? His confidence? His sense of optimism for the future?
We took him to meet with Jenny. There was a click!! He told me very early on ‘she doesn’t teach me anything, we just play games’. He very quickly started to be able to recognise the individual sounds in words and their relationship to letters. Digraphs were a bit harder but we had a breakthrough! Daddy said the ‘s word’ when we were driving ‘but it doesn’t make an s sound…’ I was quite prepared to work my way through all the words - the F word has ‘ck’ in it!
