Our vision
We are passionate about providing students, who are experiencing challenges in their learning, with the highest quality teaching and intervention. Our support and encouragement allows them to thrive and grow as learners as well as young people.
We pride ourselves on providing a warm, welcoming, positive, inclusive, happy and safe environment for all our students. We also empower parents and teachers, providing them with the information and skills required to best assist students at home and within the school.
The triad of student, parent and teacher working together, to create a path forward and to achieve the best possible outcome, is the model of the Blue Door Learning Support Centre.
This support is of great importance throughout a student’s school life, but is even more crucial in their early years. Early identification and intervention are important keys to success. We believe that excellence in teaching and supporting students who have individual learning needs requires:
Building a strong and positive relationship with students, and encouraging a growth mindset, confidence and self esteem
Focusing on high quality, standardised individual assessment of reading, spelling, writing, phonics, phonological awareness and/or mathematics
Further assessment of the key factors underpinning these skills, such as auditory and visual perception, memory, rapid automatic naming, oral language and fine motor development
Using fun and engaging, hands-on, multi-sensory instruction methods
Specific, explicit and sequential teaching in the areas identified through assessment, using evidence-based methods and strategies
Teaching students one-on-one, ensuring undivided attention during each session and the development of a strong bond
Modelling the skills required in a highly structured manner, while encouraging increasing independence over time
Continual revision of what has been taught
Our vision for the future
We continually move towards enhancing our role as a leading centre in the field of educational support, catering for students who are experiencing learning challenges. Our future direction is an expansion of the support we currently offer to students, parents and teachers, including advocacy, regular high quality professional development opportunities for teachers, consultation within schools, mentoring for pre-service (student) teachers, facilitating and taking part in research programs and publications.
